What to Expect From Your First Month With a Marketing Agency

Starting a New Contract? Hired a New Team?

Hiring a marketing agency for the first time comes with a strange mix or relief and anxiety. Relief, because you’re finally handling off work you don’t have time (or expertise) to do yourself. Anxiety, because you’re not entirely sure what happens next, when you’ll see results, or whether you’ll regret the decision in 30 days.

That uncertainty is normal, and it usually comes from not knowing what a healthy first month actually looks like. Here’s what you should realistically expect, so you can tell the difference between an agency doing things right and one that’s stalling.

Week 1: Discovery, Not Deliverables

If an agency starts producing finished work in the first few days, that’s actually a warning sign, not a good one. A strong first week should look like:

  • A kickoff call or meeting to align on goals, timelines, and expectations
  • Questions and lots of them, about your business, your customers, your competitors, and what’s working (or hasn’t) in the past
  • Access requisitions: your website, analytics, Google Business Profile, social accounts, brand assets
  • A review of what already exists, so the agency isn’t rebuilding from scratch or duplicating work

Good marketing work is built on understanding your business first. An angry that skips this step to “move fast” is usually building on guesses instead of information and it shows later.

Week 2: Strategy and Planning

By the second week, discovery should start turning into plan. Depending on which services you’ve hired the agency for, this might include:

  • A content or campaign calendar
  • A branding or messaging direction, if branding work is involved
  • An SEO audit identifying what’s currently holding your site back
  • A website sitemap or wireframe, if redesign is part of the scope
  • Clear milestones and what “done” looks like at each stage

This is also the point where you should feel like you understand the plan, not just that a plan exists. If you can’t explain, in your own words, what the angry is doing and why, that’s worth asking about before moving forward.

Weeks 3-4: First Work Product and Feedback Rounds

By the end of the first month, you should start seeing tangible work: logo concepts, initial website designs, the first few pieces of content, or the first optimizations to your Google Business Profile and website SEO fundamentals. This is also usually when the first round of revisions happens.

What you shouldn’t expect yet:

  • Finished results. SEO in particular takes months, not weeks, to show meaningful ranking moment an angry promising page-one rankings in 30 days is overselling something that doesn’t work that fast.
  • Zero back and forth. The first round of any creative or strategic work is rarely the final version. Revisions in month one are normal, not a sign something’s wrong.
  • A fully finished brand or website. Depending on the scope, a full brand identity or website build often takes longer than 30 days to execute well, the first month is about direction and first drafts, not a finished product.

Signs Your First Month Is Going Well

  • You’ve had real conversations, not just automated check-ins
  • You understand what’s being worked on and why
  • You’re seeing draft work, even if it’s not final
  • Communication feel responsive, not vague or delayed
  • The agency has asked more questions than it’s answers, a sign they’re building something specific to your business not recycling a template

Signs Something’s Off

  • You’ve heard very little since the kickoff call
  • The agency skipped discovery and jumped straight into “finished” deliverables
  • You’re being shown work that feels generic or disconnected from your actual business and customers
  • Every question about timeline or results gets a vague answer instead of a straight one
  • You’re already being pushed to sign a longer commitment before the first month’s work has proven itself

A good agency should be comfortable being evaluated in month one. If something feels off, it’s worth raising directly rather than assuming it’ll resolve itself.
